Discussion Paper

The Northern Territory Government, through the Department of the Attorney-General and Justice, is reviewing how the Northern Territory’s justice system can create better outcomes for victims of crime in the NT.

As part of that work, the Government has released this discussion paper. The main purpose of this discussion paper is to consider how the Territory’s financial assistance scheme can be improved to better support victims of violent crimes in the Territory. The discussion paper also looks at other potential reforms for victims, including:

• the possibility of introducing victim-offender conferencing for adult offenders in the Territory
• options for improving restitution and compensation orders made under the Sentencing Act.

The Government is calling for submissions on the proposals put forward in this discussion paper, and on any other issue relating to victims of crime that may not have been identified. Policy options and recommendations for change will then be further developed based on the submissions.

A submission can be as short and informal as a letter or email, or can be a more substantial document. A submission does not have to address all of the matters identified in this paper.

Non-confidentiality of submissions

Submissions will be made publicly available, and may be published on the Department’s website, unless clearly marked as “confidential”. The Department may draw upon the contents of submissions made and quote from them or refer to them in reports, which may also be made publicly available.
